I Have 800 Followers and the Algorithm Hates Me: A 7-Day Reset

If your Reel views collapsed in late 2025 or early 2026 and you're under 10k followers, the September 2025 originality update hit you. Here's the 7-day reset plan.

Salah··10 min read

Saturday morning. You open Instagram. Your Reel from yesterday has 247 views. The one before that, 189. The one before that, 312. Three months ago every Reel was getting 1,200-3,000 views. Now you're looking at numbers that say nobody is seeing your work.

You haven't done anything different.

The algorithm changed. Specifically, it changed in September 2025, and it hit accounts under 10k followers harder than any update in the last three years. This post is what to do about it.

TL;DR#

If your Reel views collapsed in late 2025 or early 2026 and you have under 10k followers, you got caught in Instagram's Sept 2025 originality update. The 7-day reset: cut posting frequency in half, post only your strongest niche content, kill anything that pattern-matches as low-effort or AI-generated, and audit your last 30 Reels for what's actually working. Most accounts recover baseline reach within 14-21 days. Day-by-day plan below.

What actually changed in September 2025#

In September 2025 Instagram's ranking model started weighing originality signals much more heavily for accounts that haven't crossed the 10k follower threshold. "Originality" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The model is checking for:

  • AI fingerprints in captions and audio
  • Recycled footage from other platforms (TikTok watermarks especially)
  • Template-driven content that looks like dozens of other Reels in the recommendation pool
  • Content that doesn't match the account's stated niche

For accounts over 10k followers, the algorithm has years of behavioral data and tends to trust the account. For accounts under 10k, it's still making up its mind. The originality penalty hits hardest there.

The threshold isn't a hard line at 10k. It's a softening of penalties as you grow. But if you're under 5k, the penalty is brutal.

This is not "shadowban" in the conspiracy-theory sense. It's deprioritization in the recommendation pool. Your followers can still see your posts (mostly). The algorithm just stops pushing them to non-followers, which is where 80% of small-account growth comes from.

Why sub-10k got hit hardest#

Three reasons:

  1. Less data. The algorithm has fewer signals to know whether your content is good. When in doubt, it suppresses.
  2. More noise. A huge share of new sub-10k accounts in 2024-2025 were AI-generated faceless channels. The category got polluted, and the cleanup hit everyone in it.
  3. No follower counterweight. A 100k-follower account that posts AI-flagged content still gets reach because their followers actively engage with it. A 1k-follower account doesn't have that counterweight.

None of this is your fault. It's also not a reason to quit. The reset works.

The 7-day reset#

Day 1: Audit the last 30 days#

Open your Reels analytics. Look at the last 30 Reels. Sort by view count. Then ask:

  • Which Reels did unusually well?
  • Which Reels died on the vine?
  • What's different between the two groups?

Write it down. Specifically. "Reels with my face do 3x better than text-on-screen ones." "Reels with niche-specific hooks do 5x better than generic 'mindset' content."

The patterns are usually obvious once you stop scrolling and start looking.

Day 2: Cut your posting frequency in half#

If you've been posting daily, drop to every other day. If you've been posting twice a day, drop to once.

This is counterintuitive but critical. The algorithm is currently telling you "we don't know what your account is about." Posting less, but better, lets it form a clearer signal. Volume is hurting you right now.

Day 3: Pick ONE niche and stay in it for 30 days#

Pull up your last 10 Reels. Are they about the same thing? Probably not. Most stalled accounts are diversifying because they think variety helps reach. It hurts reach.

Pick the one topic where your past best-performing Reels live. Post only in that niche for the next 30 days. The algorithm needs a clear signal of "this account is about X." Give it that signal aggressively.

Day 4: Kill anything that looks AI#

Read your last 10 captions. Find:

  • "Are you tired of…"
  • "It's important to note…"
  • "In today's fast-paced world…"
  • Any em-dash you didn't intend
  • Any delve, leverage, navigate, robust, streamline

If you find them, you've been letting AI tools write your captions. Stop. The originality model reads captions; AI fingerprints in captions are one of the strongest demotion signals for sub-10k accounts.

If you must use AI for caption help, run the 4-step humanization framework first.

Day 5: Engage outward, not inward#

Spend 30 minutes commenting on Reels in your niche from accounts in your follower range. Not your followers' content. Reels from creators 2-5x your size who are posting in your niche.

This is how you signal to the algorithm "this account belongs to this niche community." Engagement out, not engagement in. The algo reads outbound engagement as identity, inbound engagement as popularity. Identity matters more for small accounts.

Day 6: Post one Reel that hits the originality criteria hard#

Make this one count. The Reel should:

  • Use a niche-specific hook from one of the 6 patterns (list here)
  • Have an original opener (no recycled phrasing from any other Reel you've seen)
  • Be filmed natively or shot vertically without watermarks from TikTok or other platforms
  • Have a caption written without AI assistance (or rigorously edited if AI-assisted)
  • Use either original audio or a trending sound that hasn't been used 100k+ times yet

This is your signal post. The algorithm will use this Reel to re-evaluate what your account is and who to show it to.

Day 7: Look at the data and adjust#

After your Day 6 Reel has been live 24+ hours, check:

  • Is reach more than 2x your last 5 Reels' average?
  • Is the audience the right niche audience? (check follower demographics on profile, look at who liked the Reel)

If yes: congrats. You've signaled correctly. Keep doing exactly what you did on Day 6 for the next 14 days.

If no: the issue is deeper. See the next section.

What to do if Day 7 doesn't fix it#

If reach hasn't recovered, three options in priority order:

  1. Audit your last 100 captions and audio choices. AI fingerprints can persist in your account's history. The algorithm doesn't forget overnight. Spend a day cleaning up the worst-flagged content (delete or hide the most obviously AI-fingerprinted posts).
  2. Check trending audio repetition. If you've used the same trending audio more than 5 times in the last 60 days, that's a low-effort signal. Switch to native audio for 2 weeks.
  3. TikTok watermarks. If you've been cross-posting from TikTok with the watermark intact, that's the issue. Re-export from TikTok without the watermark, or repost natively. This is the #1 silent killer for small accounts.

If you've done all three and reach is still flat: the niche may be over-saturated, the account may have collected too many demotion signals over time, or both. In that case, starting fresh on a new account (different handle, same niche, same content) is sometimes faster than trying to revive the old one.

It's not what you want to hear. It's what works.

Why a tool helps small accounts specifically#

Small accounts can't afford waste. Every Reel is a vote on what your account is about, and at sub-10k scale you don't have the volume to recover from a string of bad votes.

CreatorHouse helps where it matters most for small accounts:

  1. Niche-tuned hooks. The generator pulls what's actually working for accounts in your follower range in your niche, not generic "viral" templates.
  2. Caption humanization. Captions go through the same anti-AI pass scripts do, so the originality model isn't reading demotion signals you didn't mean to send.
  3. Cadence guidance. The dashboard surfaces the right post frequency for your niche based on competitor data, so you're not over-posting yourself out of reach.

Reach trend on the left, recommended next-actions on the right. The recommendations update daily based on which Reels just landed.

We built this part of the product because our first user-research case was a 1.2k-follower account that flatlined for two months. We wanted the tool that would have told us, on day one, what to do.

Common questions#

Is this actually a shadowban?#

No. Shadowban implies a deliberate, account-specific punishment. The originality update is an algorithm change that demotes content matching certain patterns, regardless of who posted it. There's no "ban" to lift. There's only signal to fix.

How long does the reset take?#

Most accounts see reach recovery within 14-21 days if the reset is run properly. Some take 30-45 days. A small percentage of accounts collected enough demotion signals over time that the only practical fix is starting on a fresh account.

Should I delete my old underperforming Reels?#

You can. The honest answer is "it probably doesn't matter much." The algorithm uses recency-weighted signals; old Reels carry less weight than recent ones. Focus on shipping good new Reels, not deleting old ones. Exception: if 5-10 of your old Reels are obvious AI-fingerprint flags, deleting them won't hurt.

What about buying followers or running ads to get past 10k?#

Don't buy followers. The algorithm catches the pattern within weeks and the demotion is worse than what you're trying to escape. Ads can work to grow followers, but they don't fix the originality problem; if your Reels still pattern-match as AI, the new followers see suppressed content too.

I post 5 Reels a day and it used to work. Why is it failing now?#

5 Reels a day is too many for a sub-10k account in 2026. The algorithm reads high-frequency low-quality posting as a content-mill signal. Drop to 3 a week, all in one niche, and watch the reach come back.

My niche is small. Should I expand?#

Counterintuitively, no. Small niches with consistent posting outperform large niches with diversified posting at sub-10k scale. The algorithm rewards specificity. Small + specific beats big + generic for accounts under 10k.

What if I haven't used AI at all and I'm still suppressed?#

The originality model isn't only flagging AI. It's also flagging recycled formats, template overlays, repeated trending sounds, and TikTok watermarks. Run through Day 4-6 of the reset; you might be triggering one of those instead.

Should I tell people about this in a Story?#

No. Don't post about the algorithm. The algorithm reads complaint posts as low-engagement-quality content and your followers don't care about your reach. Just fix the reach.

Where to start#

If you're reading this and your views are collapsing, run Day 1 today. Just the audit. Twenty minutes.

The patterns will tell you most of what you need to know. Then run Day 2 tomorrow. Cut the posting frequency. Then Day 3. Pick one niche.

You don't need to do all 7 days perfectly. You need to start, and you need to stay in for the 14-21 days it takes the algorithm to re-evaluate your account.

When you're ready to stop guessing and let the tool surface what's actually working in your niche, CreatorHouse is built for the small account that can't afford to waste a single Reel.

The algorithm doesn't hate you. It just doesn't know you yet. Show it.
