I Tried to Break My Own Backtest (ATR Bands vs VWAP Bands)

Part 3 of the VWAP series.

In the last video, I found one band type that outperformed VWAP standard deviation bands: ATR bands.

The setup: VWAP ± 2× the average 1-minute range.

Initial fade rate: 59.5% vs. 55% for σ bands.

So I tried to break it.

Hook

Last video I said one other type of band did better than VWAP bands. It's ATR bands. Today, I found out if I lied to you.

Starts by referencing a previous video and poses a question, creating a direct engagement with the audience.

“Last video I said one other type of band did better than VWAP bands. It's ATR bands. Today, I found out if I lied to you.”

0:08Setup

Recaps the previous information about sigma bands, setting the stage for the comparison with ATR bands.

“Quick recap: Standard deviation bands look perfect on the chart because sigma is calculated from price. Price runs, the band runs with it. With real orders, fading two sigma was a coin flip.”

0:19Content

Explains the difference of ATR bands and introduces the core test result, generating immediate interest.

“ATR bands are different. ATR measures how much price moves per minute, not how far it is from VWAP. So a big run doesn't drag the band along with it. Same VWAP, same width on average, same test as last time. 59.5%.”

0:35Content

Demonstrates the rigorous process of backtesting by actively trying to 'break' the results, building credibility.

“So I did what you should do with every backtest that makes you happy. I tried to break it.”

0:40Reveal

Reveals a bug in the code, highlighting transparency and a dedication to accurate data, which is crucial for a trading-focused audience.

“I found a bug in my own code. The ATR was peeking at the rest of the current minute, up to a minute into the future. In trading, that's basically a time machine. Fixed it. 58.”

1:51Recap

Summarizes the comparative performance of the bands, acknowledging a small win but ultimately concluding the lack of a significant edge.

“To be fair, one thing did hold up. ATR bands beat sigma bands on both NQ and ES. Measuring the stretch in units of how fast the market is moving is the least bad way to draw a band. But least bad isn't good. It's a coin flip that loses a little less often than the other coins.”

2:07CTA

Offers a clear final verdict and actionable advice for traders, ending with a strong philosophical takeaway about independent testing.

“So, final verdict on bands. Sigma bands: a coin flip that looks like a religion. ATR bands: a slightly better coin. Use bands to see how stretched the day is. Just don't hand them your stop. And the best part about trying to break your own backtest? You stop needing other people to do it for you.”
