So if you wanna be rich and you're in the search phase of your life, then get used to one thing: You are not part of the team, although you may have to pretend you are.
The video starts with a direct address to those seeking wealth, using a bold statement to capture attention.
“So if you wanna be rich and you're in the search phase of your life, then get used to one thing: You are not part of the team, although you may have to pretend you are.”
The speaker elaborates on the initial statement, framing traditional employment as a strategic 'reconnaissance expedition' for learning, rather than a final goal.
“To put it more politely, you may have to adopt the idea of teamwork for the time being to help yourself understand better how individuals, departments, companies and industries function. You should certainly do so enthusiastically and conscientiously. But in your secret heart, however hard you work, you must not be deceived. Working for others is a reconnaissance expedition, a means and not an end in itself. It is an apprenticeship and not a goal.”
The speaker attributes the initial advice to a famous book, adding authority and credibility to the concept.
“That is a quote from Felix Dennis's famous book, 'How to Get Rich'.”
The speaker transitions to a personal anecdote, setting up a relatable scenario where his father offered similar 'Plan B' advice.
“And it made me think about something my dad used to tell me when I was coming out of college and I wanted to be a writer. And he would always suggest these, like, very practical jobs that, like, maybe you should go into journalism. Maybe you could be in marketing or, like, a copywriter.”
The speaker recounts his initial resistance to 'Plan B' and how his father reframed it as a strategic undercover mission.
“And it used to. It used to bug me because I was like, I was very much always of the mindset that, like, there's no room for Plan B. Just be Plan A. And if I go into the Plan B, I'm going to start barking up the wrong tree type thing. I'll start going too far down the wrong road, and I'll lose sight of where I was trying to go. But he would always say to me, he'd say, it's not that black and white, though. You can go into these jobs like a spy. You can go undercover. Just like Felix Dennis is saying. You go in, you gather some experience, you gather some skills, maybe even make some friends and some connections, and then when the time is right, you get out and you do your thing.”
The speaker acknowledges the validity of the 'spy' approach but warns of the danger of getting too comfortable, using a popular cultural reference.
“He was more or less right that you can do that. One thing I just wanna say, though, is if you do go the Plan B route, though, and you say, I'm going to go undercover for a little while in this job, be mindful of the fact that you could get comfortable. The money could be good. Like I said, you can make some friends. You could start to see how this could be a viable life path. Just like how Jim in 'The Office' sticks around at Dunder Mifflin for way too long. Jim is actually kind of a tragic example of this, because I guess eventually he leaves and does something else. But he's the person who did Plan B and then got comfy. Thought my job's not the worst, you know, I'm kind of friends with the receptionist, and there's a funny guy I make fun of Dwight and, uh, it's a relaxed environment. But anyone who's watching knows that Jim is utterly wasting his potential. That's the danger with a Plan B like that. It's almost sticky to an extent.”
