Most stocks in the S&P 500 are falling. A handful of A.I. stocks are hiding it.

The stock market is betting on A.I. The economy has already moved on. And a gap like that doesn’t last.

→ Market breadth just hit two standard deviations below normal. Most S&P 500 companies trade below their 50- and 200-day averages, while most A.I. stocks sit within 5–10% of their highs. Since mid-August, the index is down about 1%. The average stock, about 6%.
→ Growth and momentum led again last week, and those are the A.I. stocks. Breadth, value and quality sat out another week.
→ GDP and the S&P 500 move together about 88% of the time, roughly six months apart. The rest of the time they drift apart, until a sharp rotation closes the gap.
→ Last quarter’s GDP showed A.I. lost its grip on growth, while the real economy and defensive sectors took the lead. The market is still one big A.I. bet.
→ Timing: our new gauge, VIX-implied vs S&P-realized daily moves, says not yet. Every big stretch in that gap has been a great time to buy the dip. Right now it’s quiet, and the S&P is back above 7,700.

This week:
1. Monday: services PMI, the defensive side of the economy.
2. Wednesday: the Fed, under Kevin Warsh. Trump wants easier money. The bond market is pushing toward more hikes.
3. Friday: Delta reports, and consumer sentiment, already at an all-time low.

Hold one thing: the market and the economy have split, and we’re outside that 88%. That’s where the money is made, if you get the direction and the picks right. Our 6–12 month watchlist is built for exactly that.

Coming up: the services PMI breakdown, our September portfolio review, and the housing trade list for Premium members.
