What exactly is an apartment and why do humans live in such things?
The video starts with a philosophical question about apartments, creating immediate curiosity.
“What exactly is an apartment and why do humans live in such things?”
The video then provides a biological and structural description of an apartment, comparing it to a 'cave system' and 'apartment building'.
“Biologically speaking, apartment is a rectangular cave system humans crawl into to survive the night. These cave systems are stacked onto one another to form a larger cave facility called an apartment building.”
It discusses the concept of paying rent to a 'queen human' and questions the standard practice.
“To get to live in one of these caves, the human needs to pay rent to a queen human every time the moon cycles around the planet, which is around every 30 days. It is not exactly obvious why this is the standard practice.”
The video delves into the design problem of shelters, comparing human doors and keys to beaver's water protection, highlighting the perceived inefficiency of human methods.
“The fundamental design problem with any cave or a shelter in general is that you need to get inside it somehow, but you don't want anyone else to get inside it. Beavers solved this by using water to form a protectional layer that only they know how to pass. Humans, on the other hand, they weren't as clever. For some reason, humans insist on using vertically hinged timber panels called doors to form the entry point. A door can only be opened with a very specific little metal piece. According to humans, nobody really likes these metal pieces as they are so easy to lose. A fresh dive underwater at the entrance could very well be a nice alternative.”
The video questions the use of glass windows, linking it back to the purpose of sleep in a cave.
“Another interesting feature about human caves is that they use this crazy transparent stone called glass to let light into the cave. I'm not entirely sure humans want to let light into the cave. I mean, you can't sleep if there's light. Wasn't the whole point of having the cave in the first place to get to sleep peacefully?”
It contrasts human reliance on external protection with animals having integrated protection like armor, framing human strategy as 'resilience through options'.
“The big question is of course, why do humans need all this external protection in the first place? Why didn't evolution just give humans a thicker waterproof skin, better weapons and 360 degree vision, just to name few other options for protection. The strategy of being a human is really in the ability to do so many different things. Our hands are not designed for a single specific use, but rather for any use. Same goes with every other feature about our bodies. If you want to design an animal that can do anything, you don't want to restrict the movement of the animal with unnecessary armor and stuff. So it makes sense to outsource the protection to brick and timber. But this is not the case at all for many other animals. There are so many animals that are loaded with weapons and armor. The protection is integrated into the animal itself.”
The video concludes by reiterating that an apartment is simply a survival strategy within the broader context of evolutionary tactics.
“At the end of the day, an apartment is just another survival strategy.”
