I just got out of the Chanel show at the Grand Palais. And the thing I keep thinking whenever I see a collection by Matthieu Blazy is that this is anti-Ozempic fashion. And I mean that in the best way.
The speaker immediately introduces herself and her location, drawing viewers into her experience right after a major fashion event.
“I just got out of the Chanel show at the Grand Palais.”
She presents her central, provocative thesis about the collection, sparking curiosity about what 'anti-Ozempic fashion' entails.
“And the thing I keep thinking whenever I see a collection by Matthieu Blazy is that this is anti-Ozempic fashion. And I mean that in the best way.”
She contextualizes the collection's theme, explaining the inspiration behind the designs.
“For this show, Matthieu Blazy went all in on the idea of fairy tales. Possibly because Chanel itself has been the fashion fairy tale of the year.”
Detailed descriptions of the clothing silhouettes and overall style help viewers visualize the aesthetic.
“It's a very slouchy silhouette. Often to your knee or below, with a longer jacket or a tunic on top. Even the evening gowns are kind of long and lithe, and nothing is too tight or restrictive.”
Highlighting specific, playful details reinforces the fairy tale theme and shows the craftsmanship.
“But it was—again, it was the details that really spoke of the theme. Some of the buttons would have ducklings on them or Puss in Boots. Here's a scarecrow in tweed. This one is the ugly duckling that turns into a swan. And you can see the incredible embroidery. A beanstalk dress. It's actually a bias-cut evening gown that the beanstalk winds around until you climb to the top of the neck. Sheer shirt over a sheer skirt with a sheer jacket on top.”
She reiterates the key appeal of the collection – its ease and unconstricting nature – linking back to her initial thesis.
“But again, like, super slouchy, super easy, hands in the pockets. It's kind of the person you want to be. To see something that is loose and easy and unconstricting is enormously exciting. And hopefully, might start a trend in itself.”
She critically assesses the practicality and aesthetic of some designs, offering a balanced perspective on the collection's shapes.
“The shapes, in part because they are so easy, can sometimes be a little frumpy, let's say. You know, a very long, squared-off jacket and a long, squared-off skirt can be—not the most flattering, but it's definitely the most motile.”
The segment concludes with a powerful metaphorical statement about the bride and the 'Revenge Dress,' offering a deeper interpretation of the collection's message.
“Interestingly, he put the bride in the middle of the show because he said fairy tales are not always entirely uncomplicated happy endings. And he ended the show with what he called the Revenge Dress—a black dress that was, in fact, the only garment in the entire collection that seemed to have a real structure inside of it. So take that as you will.”
