Being inconsistent isn't because you lack skills. It's because you lack two things.
And if you don't use these two things, then your performances are going to constantly become emotional roller coasters. You might get performances, but then you'll probably dip out of performance, you'll lose form, and you'll constantly be riding that emotional roller coaster of highs, lows, and never feel like you're consistently being a go-to player.
And so the way you become consistent is by first getting a routine. Understanding how you perform by building a routine. You have to build routines from understanding your processes of how you execute your game plans and your skills, and then being able to execute, which is what we'll get onto the second skill. But you have to build your routine first. People who are consistent, you will see that they do the same thing over and over again. The reason why people struggle with this is because it's boring, it's monotonous. You have to do some really dull training over and over again to put in the 10,000 hours, to put in the skill sets, to build the skill sets, to build the time that you need to have on task to know that you can be consistent using a routine over and over again. If you're in tennis, it could be a pre-ball, pre-serve routine. If you're a cricketer, it could be a pre-ball routine. If you're a footballer, it could be a routine that you have before a match. It could be a specific warm-up. It could even be before you take a free kick what you do. Ronaldo used to go through a routine over and over again. So building a routine is the first step to being consistent.
And then you're going to need focus. You are going to need to be present in the moment to focus on executing your skill. People who are not present, who get torn away into the ideas of what could happen in the future or what has happened in the past, they are the ones that are inconsistent because they are not in the moment. Being able to execute your routines, execute your game plans, execute your processes, means that you've got that routine that you stay present and you can just do it over and over and over again.
Presence is the only way to execute. If you are not present, you are either in the future, you're in the past, you're getting distracted. Those distractions will cost you consistency in the long run. So become consistent by building your routines, become present. Focus on being present and you'll find that those consistent performances will come.
